AMEN! As a locksmith I couldn’t agree more!!! (except the “I didn’t call these guys, NO ONE should lie to the police, it just leads to problems later) Real simple, here’s your service call, and it’ll cost THIS much per whatever, if you want it in writing, by all means. If it’s a special circumstance, that’s included in the talk/paperwork before the work begins. I DO charge a service call IF a customer cancels AFTER I’ve left on late night calls, but I tell them that BEFOREHAND!.

Thanks for giving advise on lying to the police that “I never called them, don’t know them.” That sounds like very ethical advise.

Our shop has been around since 1932 and when someone calls us out and we dispatch a van to their location, if they didn’t call back and cancel before we roll up to the job location, they are expected to at very least pay the service call if they decide they no longer want the work done or worse, they called more than one locksmith.

Like someone else said on here, those middle eastern people you refer to are Israelis, not arabs and I can guarantee you $65 will NOT put food on any Israeli table for a month. I’m jewish and have family there and I can assure you that the cost of living there can easily compare to some US cities especially in Tel Aviv.

I had to call locksmith yesterday to unlock my car.
he wanted to charge me $170!!!!!!
I told him no way and go.
Then he said “what would you pay for it to open?”
what a crock….fee should have been around $50.
I end up paying $100 because I wanted to get out of there but man….from now on get price quote before having them come…..

I think you need to get more specific – the bogus locksmiths are Israeli, which is also ME, but you are confusing Arabs with Israelis when you use “Middle Eastern” – I would say about 100% of these bogus locksmiths are Israeli – Google “Billion Dollar Israeli Scammer Machine”

I’m a locksmith in Chicago and I can attest to the massive problem we have here with dishonest locksmiths. I got so sick of the negative crap that I allowed my house to be used in a sting operation by Fox News. We had all the Israeli type companies come to my home and unlock it for the reporter. I wasn’t there and they never even asked for ID. They could never pick the F51 Bell knob that had only three chambers with pins so they would drill and charge for a new lock and more labor.

I know this guy. He is an idiot. He does not know what he is doing as far as running a locksmith business. He would rather climb a tree and tell a lie, then stand on the ground and tell the truth. The only way he stays in business is by buying other locksmiths phone numbers. Has very little repeat business. This is not “slander” it is the plain truth. It’s people like him that give the rest of us locksmiths a bad name.

If people didn’t lock their keys in their house/car in the first place then they wouldn’t have to worry about paying a locksmith! It’s like going shopping; one store might have something you want for $50 cheaper than another store. You can’t go and bitch to the BBB when you find out that you paid more. It’s business! Boo fucking hoo.

First of all, The guy who paid & 1700 is a fucking moron. I wish people who are bitching about locksmiths ripping people off would start bitching about something more important like car insurance and health insurance providers ripping us all off! It’s business! It’s freedom. If they have a license to work or are registered in that state then it’s fair for them to charge what they want to charge. If they are registered than they ARE NOT phony!

In most states like in CT you can ask to see there State license number and it should be posted on all ads they have. If they don’t have one they will not call the cops and you should not hire them.

That old guy got over. I don’t come out unless I’m getting at least $2000, and that’s with my clothes ON! If he called me I would have taken everything in his house including the family dog.

    $1700????

How on earth did he get away with that? The most I ever charge for a simple lockout for a house is $75 and that’s if it’s 3 in the morning and more than 5 miles away but never once have I gone over $100.

    From 9 AM to 5 PM I Charge $65.00
    From 5 PM to 10 PM I Charge $75.00
From 10 PM to 12 AM I would charge $85.00
From 12 AM to 4 AM I could see myself charging $110.00 if I was really tired and it was raining, but first I would let the customer know that our price would be just $65.00 in the morning.
